Lal Laleş
Poet, translator, and editor.
Born in 1975 in Qoser (Kızıltepe) in Mêrdîn (Mardin) Province, Laleş graduated from the Department of History of Dicle University. He worked for independent theatre groups such as Tiyatro Anadolu, İmgesel Düşler (Imaginary Dreams) and Teatre Orient as playwright, director, and art director between the years of 1993 and 2006. His poems written in the Kurmanjî dialect of Kurdish were compiled in a book titled Berbejna Rê (Amulet of the Road) in 2003. Laleş, who mainly makes use of historical and mythological figures and references in his works, has presented papers about modern Kurdish poetry, Kurdish literature, and the Kurdish publishing world at panel discussions and conferences in Turkey and in various European countries. Since 2004, Lal Laleş has been the executive editor of Lîs Publishing House in Diyarbakır. He has been active in editing a number of the publishing house’s book series, such as Mohrên Mor (Violet Signets) and Pirtûkxaneya Ehmedê Xanî (Ahmad-i Khani Library). His poems have been translated into Turkish, Arabic, Swedish and English and have been published in multiple periodicals.
